Just imagine Steve somewhere remote, having been in hiding for two years, suddenly hearing the ringing of a flip phone identical to the one he gave Tony so long ago. His heart races, his palms sweat and his hands shake. He picks up and with a broken voice asks, “Tony?”. But it’s not Tony’s voice that greets him through the line and Steve feels his heart break once again.
In the end, even though he promised, when Tony needed him he wasn’t there.
